The original Silencer game was written by a company called Mind-Control, which is no longer in operation. For some time after Mind-Control disappeared one of the original coders, going by the name GodsButler, tried to keep the game running. However, GB eventually moved on as well.
The current Silencer Mod team consists of four members. [SilentDemon] initiated the project and is working on maps. Sushi-Man is also creating maps, drawing on three years experience working with Half-Life. Dark Webster is a 2D artist putting together sprites and textures, and Serial Number is writing the actual code.
[Sierra Studios] is the company responsible for the production of Half-Life. It's interesting to note that Sierra owns Won.net, as Won.net provided the servers for Silencer and hired Mind-Control to write the game in the first place.
I go by [Viscia]. I'm a student at [Earlham College] in Richmond Indiana. I'm leaning toward a Fine Arts major in the hopes of eventually landing a job working with computer graphics or websites.
The original Silencer was a 2D action/strategy game played online through Won.net. Players could form teams based on their character's agency, with a maximum of three players to a team. Teams then competed to hack terminals and be the first to collect three government secrets. The game no longer functions because Won.net dropped support
The Silencer Mod is a project headed up by [SilentDemon] to build a Half-Life modification based on the original Silencer game.
Mod is short for modification. Half-Life was designed to be easily modified so that it's engine can be used as a basis for completely different 3D games. In this case, the Silencer Mod will be an add on to Half-Life that converts the play of the 2D Silencer game into 3D.
The Silencer mod is not yet completed. When it is, it should be available for download here.
Because [Half-Life] is a commercial game produced by [Sierra Studios] it is not distributed freely. There is a demo available from Sierra, however in order to run the Silencer Mod it will be necessary to own a copy of the full game. Please be aware that I am not interested in providing ways to pirate the game, in spite of my opinions about free licensing and the evils of corporate power.
There is no set date at this point, as there is a significant amount of work to be done.
The original Silencer was a free, multiplayer, 2D action/strategy game created by Mind-Control and hosted by Won.net. The last release was Beta 110, released in May of 2000. Beta 111 was scheduled to be the final release, which would have included a level editor and come out toward summer's end in 2000. This was not to be. Mind-Control was long disbanded by the time 110 came out, the sole remaining coder was not being paid for his work, and Won.net seemed to have lost all interest in supporting the game. By September 2000 Won had cut off links to the download page and removed references to the game's existence from their site. In October they shut down their servers, making the game un-playable. This fansite was closed barring further developments. The original Silencer game is no more.
On October 1st, 2000, prior to Won.net's server shutdown, SilentDemon announced that he would be working on a Half-Life Silencer Mod. He put out a request that those interested in helping contact him, and used the message board to keep people informed. Toward the end of October this site reopened with the intent of following SilentDemon's progress. Since then SilentDemon has provided screenshots and information on the coding development, and it should be a matter of time before another round of Silencer gaming begins.
[SilentDemon] and the team are in need of modelers to help them with their work. Your best bet is to put together a model or two and contact [SilentDemon] about reviewing it. Currently the fansite is in fairly good shape. Look around, follow the news, let me know if there are any mistakes and enjoy.
